SPECIALIST: Diploma in Agriculture and Bachelor of Environmental Management and Planning
Nga Whenua Rahui – Department of Conservation
Jason Taiaroa has always been interested in the environment, so a degree in this field was a natural choice.
“Being of Māori descent, I have learnt the significance of the natural environment to my culture. The BEMP gave me an opportunity to learn western-based science and methods that would significantly add to my Māori background.”
Jason says his experience at Lincoln has set him up well for his career. “I have been spending quite a bit of time in the office gaining experience in management, planning, organising, controlling and monitoring various projects, including main island predator-free kokako sanctuaries. I am also involved with the liaison to councils and Māori trusts. When I get outdoors, it’s usually carrying out audits and monitoring, therefore being able to provide recommendations to projects.
“I like knowing that what I am learning will not only benefit myself, but also my whānau, iwi, New Zealanders and future generations.”
